Our Two Cents
The Fly M16 Waterproof Riding shoes are a leather riding shoe with some ankle protection and sharp looks.
I like the looks of this shoe. The black leather looks nice and the suede trim adds some style. The shoes come with either black or white laces so you can switch the look if you like, I especially like the cushy padding around the upper neck of the boots. That padding will help with the break-in around your ankles. The inner sole is removable and you can use your own inner-sole if you like. I was wishing the stock ones had a bit more cushion to them, but they will probably be OK for most. These shoes have a built in waterproof liner, but a short shoe like this won’t do a very good job in rain on a bike. The water is bound to come in the shoe over the top. Also, the leather used in this shoe has a relatively nice finish and I don’t think rain would do them any favors. But at least for the occasional shower, they may be useful.
The safety features here are just marginal. There are a couple of discs of armor built into the shoe on the sides of the ankles, but in the sample shoe I have, the discs are a bit low and to the rear and so they don’t fit directly over the ankle bone. There is no reinforcement in the toe area and the soles aren’t stiffened. The shoes close with ordinary laces and there isn’t anything to cover the ends of the laces which would have been nice to keep the laces from hanging up on bike hardware. But to be fair, the shortcomings I’m listing here are similar to those in other shoes like this. Overall, I think these shoes look pretty nice for the money. :: Paul, 07-26-19
