Sizing Information

These pants are made to be worn over street clothes and the sizing of the waist includes enough room to go over clothing (about one or two inches bigger than stated). I measured about a dozen pair of varying waist and inseam lengths and all measured out remarkably close to the size chart (which, I must say doesn’t happen all that often), so I recommend you choose a size using the chart in the same waist/inseam you normally buy.

Beware that some men’s jeans are “vanity sized” so when in doubt use a tape around your waist to get an accurate measurement. Measure just above your jeans waist, just under the navel. If you are between sizes, choose larger because these pants have waist adjustment tabs that adjust DOWN from the stated waist size.

If you have a bit of a belly, you’ll want to put a tape around your waist to check your size. Measure a little higher up than where your jeans ride… just below the navel. Motorcycle pants like this ride higher on the waist and you have to make sure the pants will be comfortable and most people with a bit of a belly will be a bit larger higher on the waist as compared to where regular fit jeans ride.

Our Two Cents

FirstGear’s HT Overpants have been a best seller for as long as we’ve been in this business (and maybe then some). The idea is simple… an overpant that can quickly be pulled on over your street clothes to provide protection from crashing and from the elements, and to keep your street clothes clean. The shell of the pant is made of a heavy weight abrasion resistant material much like you’d find in most textile gear. The pant shell is constructed to keep water out. The zippers are waterproof and/or all openings have double flaps to act as a rain gutter. I’ve shown these features in our photo gallery. Just take the “View Larger Images” link above to see those. The shell being waterproof, and since there are no venting provisions, you’ll want to consider this style for mild to cold and/or wet weather use. You could make short trips in hot weather, but they’ll quickly become uncomfortable. Speaking of cold weather, you get a full length insulated liner which is removable. With the liner in place, and when used over street clothes, these pants should be comfortable down to very low temps. The pants have a front thigh cargo style pocket and a rear zippered billfold pocket in back. It looks like they have two other patch pockets in front but those are actually openings to allow you to reach inside into your regular pants pockets. Clever! For impact protection, there are CE protectors in the knees and foam in the hips. Both are in pockets that Velcro in place and each are adjustable up or down a couple inches so you can get them in a comfortable spot when you are on the bike. For visibility at night, the pants have some good reflectives (see our “night shots” in the photo gallery), and there are a couple heat resistant patches on the insides of the pant legs. Overall, another winner for FirstGear. A workhorse of a pant that you’ll get lots of miles out of. :: Paul, 10-07-13
