Sizing Information

The Kanto jacket is a sport/race cut leather jacket and therefore fits closer to the body than most Olympia style jacket which are mostly street/touring styles which fit more casually. Generally speaking we find Olympia gear to be sized a bit larger than most other brands size for size, and this one runs a bit bigger too.

Olympia’s standard size chart reflects the generous sizing for jackets on the larger end of the spectrum, but we think it understates the size of the smaller jackets. To make size selection easier, we’ve developed the chart below to help you choose a size based upon your chest and belly measurements. If you find yourself between sizes in the chart, I’d advise going with the small due to the generally generous cut of the jacket.

The chest sizes for each alpha size jacket are comparable to the textile jackets but the taper from the chest to waist in more in line with the sport cut nature of the jacket. For example, the average textile/street jacket will drop about 2” from chest to waist, but this one drops about 4” to 6”. So in choosing a size, its important to make sure the jacket you choose will fit both your chest and belly.

Jacket Size Max Chest Max Belly
Small 40 34
Medium 43 37
Large 45 38
XL 48 44
XXL 51 47
XXXL 54 50
XXXXL 60 56

I find the overall sizing of the shoulders and arms of this jacket to be noticeably more roomy than most other sport/race leather jackets we sell (such as Alpinestars), so if you have stout build then you will like the cut of this jacket, but if you have a slim build, then you’ll probably like the cut of the European brands better. The more generous cut of this jacket is comparable to what we see with the sport jackets from Joe Rocket and Cortech/Tour Master which are also US brands.

Our Two Cents

The Kanto is a new sport/race style leather jacket from Olympia… their first in fact. It is a nicely styled jacket made of heavy duty leather. It gives a more generous cut than most similar jackets we sell (as discussed above) which may be a plus for you if you have a more hefty build.

This is a solid leather sport jacket with no venting provisions so it will work best in cold to mild… and maybe even warm weather (but not hot summer weather). The jacket comes with a removable quilted vest liner you can use in lower temps to provide a layer of insulation. The leather used is VERY thick so the abrasion protection here should be great. And I like the heavy duty zippers with a nice heavy main zipper pull that would be easily workable with gloves.

The armor in the jacket is comparable to the D3O products in many styles of jacket we sell. It is a softer, more pliable material that protects by becoming momentarily more firm when there is an impact. The armor in this jacket is another brand but it looks and feels similar to the D3O. Armor inserts are included for the shoulders and elbows and back and there are also additional hard armor pieces built into the shoulder area (which you can see in the pictures). Those pieces are aesthetic but also functional to increase the jacket’s ability to disperse the effect of a hard impact.

The ends of the sleeves and the collar are made of a neoprene type material, which works a lot better than leather. It is softer and more pliable and will be more comfortable around your neck and wrists particularly when the jacket is new and not yet broken in. The neck size is wide (in keeping with the generally roomy cut of the jacket). The sleeve ends are not as tapered as many other styles. Wearing race/gauntlet gloves might prove to be an issue though because the sleeve ends don’t adjust down to be flush on your wrist. There is a small leather tab over the zipper pull at the sleeve end, but unfortunately it doesn’t function to adjust the cuff size, but rather only covers the zipper pull. This jacket has an extreme amount of stretch material on the arms and on the back of the shoulders, so I don’t think there is a sport cut jacket that allows better movement than this one. If you don’t like the constricting feeling you find in other brand sport jackets, this one just might do the trick for you. :: Paul, 11-30-17
