Our Two Cents

The 2019 version of the Fly Racing FL2 glove is a street/racing full gauntlet leather glove. It offers significant protective features at an affordable price.

This new version is very similar to the FL2 we reviewed in 2017, so some of my review is copy/paste. The main difference I seen with this new design is with gauntlet protection. The protector piece on the outside of the wrist is pretty massive. And it’s comfortable and well positioned. I’d only suggest this glove for use with a sport jacket though since you really need to wear this gauntlet OVER your jacket sleeve. The knuckle protection is redesigned just a bit. Functionally it looks similar to the previous version, but the hard rubber piece you see over the knuckle has slits so you can see the energy absorbing armor underneath, which is covered in red material just for style. It’s a small thing, but it’s sharp none the less.

The whole knuckle armor assembly is mounted to the glove to be “free floating” meaning that the back side of the armor piece is not secured to the glove. That way, when you make a fist, the knuckle protector rides above your hand and doesn’t bind like it would if it were fully secured to the glove all the way around. Nearly all good sport gloves like this with hard armor are constructed this way.

The palm is fitted with a hard plastic slider. The palm slider is designed to promote sliding on the pavement if you take a tumble. If they weren’t there, leather material would be the primary material to hit the road and the leather would have more of a tendency to grab or twist your hand since it is a higher friction surface. There are also similar armor bits on the backs of all the fingers.

The fingers are sewn with the seams to the outside of the glove and most gloves styles like this are put together this way. Having the seams on the outside of the fingers makes for a more comfortable fit. A Velcro close wrist strap is included to secure the glove to your wrist and the strap has a leather flap over the top to protect it in a fall. Another handy feature is the inclusion of some conductive thread in the tip area of the fingers so you can manipulate your electronics with the gloves on.

This is a solid leather glove so it is not vented so they’ll work best in mild to warm weather conditions. The gloves are lined with soft slippery nylon material, so they’ll be comfortable wear without much break-in.

And while these gloves aren’t in the same league as much more expensive race gloves from the likes of Alpinestars or Dainese, they are a pretty good glove for the money. They’ll make a good street/sport glove and may be up to the task of some light-duty amateur track use. :: Paul, 11-14-19
