Sizing Information

These jackets are sold in US based “alpha” sizes. Alpinestars publishes a super-complicated size chart which can be used to pick a size based upon your chest and waist. We’ve condensed their chart down to make it easy to read (see below).

This particular style runs a bit smaller than other recent models we’ve tested from Alpinestars. The fit is definitely “European” because the jackets we tried on our fit check mannequins Huey and Dewey fit good and look good, but they don’t have much extra room. My measurements of other sizes confirms this.

If you like a very trim fit, then you’ll like this style in the size you normally choose, but if you prefer a more “American” fit or you are between sizes, I’d recommend you choose a size larger than you usually wear. And since this jacket has a pretty trim fit, you’ll also want to check your belly (if you have one) and make sure the jacket size you pick is big enough for your mid-section as well as your chest.

Jacket Size Chest Range Waist/Belly Range
Small 37.5 to 39 31 to 32.5
Medium 40 to 41.5 33.5 to 35
Large 42 to 43.5 36 to 37.5
XL 44.5 to 46 38 to 40
XXL 47 to 49 40.5 to 42
XXXL 49 to 51 43 to 44.5
XXXXL 51.5 to 53 45 to 47

Our Two Cents

I photo’d the T-Jaws Air Jacket and also the T-GP Pro Air jacket today, and functionally, I don’t see a substantive difference between the two, so I’m going to give you some thoughts on both at the same time. These two styles are the best two mostly-mesh jackets for warm weather use introduced by Alpinestars this season. There are about four other styles with VERY similar names that hover just above the $200 mark that all have about the same functionality as well. What is different here? Well, I see a better lining system that more securely holds the elbow, shoulder, back and chest armor to the jacket shell. The pockets are constructed as more of the shell than just pockets in the jacket’s liner and therefore those armor pieces stay in position better. Also both styles have a waterproof breast pocket for storage of valuables or electronics. Speaking of armor, both jackets come with a simple foam back pad and chest pads, but both are upgradable to more substantial units if you wish. Sizing might take consideration if you plan to upgrade both. The upgrade versions are thicker and will make the jacket effectively more snug. If you think you might upgrade, it would be wise to order those units with the jacket so you can evaluate the issue while you are able to still return/exchange for size. If you don’t want to do that, just make sure you have some breathing room in the jacket you pick for a future installation. All these Alpinestars textile/mesh construction jackets will function very similarly as far as admitting air through and keeping you cool. These two styles both have a removable windproof liner you can use to block the flow of air and extend the useful/comfortable range a bit lower, but by and large consider these jackets for mild to hot weather use. The overall cut is for sport riders. The sleeves are slightly pre-curved and forward reaching. I really like the looks of the white/yellow jacket. Like I said above, the overall fit is trim and snug. It is a sharp look for sure. Both these jackets have an all-around zipper for connection to Alpinestars pants (that are equipped with the same all-around zipper). The major difference between these two styles is how they look, so you can simply make a decision based upon that. And if you think you might consider a few less features, there are the other three or four styles (at the time of this writing), and you can pick through the features to see specifically what makes them a bit less money. Mostly it will be the liner system or no removable thermal liner. I’ve commented in other reviews that these jackets from Alpinestars are unique because they offer such substantial protection features (and upgrades). Also, they are definitely a sport cut for sport riders. :: Paul, 03-12-14
